I is a founding member and managing partner in the Mountain Music Project, which has been working for the promotion, preservation, and education about traditional musics. The Mountain Music Project has made a documentary film as well as a collaborative CD with great musicians from the bluegrass and old time worlds of the US and great musicians from the Nepali villages in the Himalayas. A few of the American musicians on the projects along with Tara are Sammy Shelor, Tim O'Brien, Curtis Burch, Mark Schatz, Abigail Washburn, Danny Knicely, and Tony Trischka.

After the release of the CD and DVD our work has continued with organizing festivals, concerts , workshops, lectures and discussion in both countries as well as their work in funding , coordinating, and overseeing music education programs in orphanages and for less advantaged children in Nepal. This work gives teaching jobs and experience to the members of the Gandharba musician caste of Nepal, enables children who otherwise would have no music program to learn music hands on from authentic masters, and helps to promote and preserve the music and musical traditions into the future.
